Antimicrobial Stewardship – An Evolving Imperative for Clinicians and Administrators

John Trowbridge (MD, CPE) reviews the increased focus on institutional antimicrobial stewardship programs as an evolving imperative for clinicians and administrators. This is largely in response to the increase in antibiotic resistance that has been escalating over the last decade in response to overuse of broad spectrum agents. He then outlines considerations for developing an antimicrobial stewardship program that matches an institution’s unique antibiogram and circumstances.
