As a Business Development Director for Visante UK, Clive has been instrumental in developing partnerships with various international healthcare related companies, homecare organisations and private hospitals as well as NHS Trusts. In addition he serves as a subject matter expert for intravenous compounding.

Prior to his consulting career, Clive was Regional Business Director for Hospira. In this capacity he was responsible for all operational and commercial activities related to their service provision to NHS, homecare and private hospitals which together accounted for a £26M portfolio of business. He designed, built and commissioned a licensed state of the art aseptic unit and a dedicated IT process control system which was recognised by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) as producing excellent and atypical quality results.

At Baxter Healthcare, Clive was Pharmacy Services and Business Development Manager in charge of operational excellence and profitability of the company’s UK aseptic compounding units. He created a new operational platform for Baxter’s compounding services including new unit design, staffing structures, IT development program and system of gaseous surface decontamination to improve quality and efficiency in the compounding process. He was a member of Baxter’s global compounding group, achieving the rank of Pharmacist Superintendent and Qualified Person.

As a part of his early work with Baxter, Clive Richards was appointed to initiate and develop a clinical study of the fluid balance in peritoneal dialysis patients. This was a randomized double-blind study incorporating clinical investigators across Europe and involved training a multinational team to work the project. From this he initiated a global system for the collection and dissemination of clinical data to assist with marketing Baxter’s renal products. He managed Baxter’s UK submission to the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) appraisal on home versus hospital heamodialysis. He was also chair of the ABPI task force for the Renal Services NSF.

Before this, Clive was Pharmacy Operations Manager at Fresenius Ltd. One of his achievements was managing a 400% increase in output and associated profitability of their aseptic compounding service. In addition, he established a stability laboratory to provide advice and technical support for the Northern Europe Business group and their customers for parenteral nutrition and IV drug delivery markets.

Clive’s expertise in aseptic compounding was initiated while working at the University Hospital of Wales where he was instrumental in developing the Parenteral Nutrition compounding service and the supply of ready to administer IV infusions to neonates in intensive care. This work was recognized by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (Pharmaceutical Care Award) for innovative practice and service developments that have been shown to improve the health of patients.

Clive Richards received his BPharm (Honours) from the Welsh School of Pharmacy and the MRPharmS while at Basingstoke Hospital in Hampshire. He was registered as a Qualified Person and received the MPharm from the Welsh School of Pharmacy. He also has diplomas in Computer Science, Management Studies and Health Economics.

Clive enjoys staying fit through skiing, golf and cycling with his family. He resides in Newbury, Hampshire, England.
